“Anyone can host a podcast” is a popular refrain I’ve heard from more than a few talking heads. And it’s essentially true.
With a bit of tech know-how, and a couple hours a week of free time, folks can share their opinions for anyone with a smartphone to hear.
Podcasts, or pods, as they’re often called, have become as ubiquitous as self-published books on Amazon. And, like those self-published works, finding high-quality pods in an oversaturated market can prove challenging.
I know. I’ve tried the self-publishing route. Getting your book to your target audience is tough.
In that sea of pods, finding ones that share the truth of the Catholic faith—and are engaging enough to keep your attention—can be even more challenging.
Though I admit I do listen to the occasional sports-related pod, I more often listen to Catholic pods in the hope that I grow in my faith while I drive, mow the lawn, or vacuum. It’s how I multi-task in the 21st century.
In an effort to make it easier for you to find Catholic podcasts that might help you on your faith journey—or that might entertain you after a tough day at work—I’ve put together the following list, organized by topic. I’ve listened to at least one full episode of each of these pods, and I hope it’ll help you discern which ones are right for you!
Happy listening!
Shameless Plug: Catholic-Link’s Podcast
Fr. Rob and Fr. George chat about Catholic faith and doctrine, often under 30 minutes. In approximately 4 episodes a month, they use their wit and wisdom to delve into and provide guidance regarding issues that concern the faithful. A recent episode on why Catholics can wear pants proved particularly interesting.
Catholic Podcasts For the Aspiring Apologist
Listen to the apologists at Catholic Answers, a media ministry, defend the Catholic faith. They patiently answer questions from Catholics, non-Catholic Christians, and non-Christians respectively, using plain language that’s easy for callers and listeners to understand. I highly recommend it for those yearning for the truth.
During each episode, Joe Heschmeyer, an apologist at Catholic Answers, digs deep into a topic that prevents non-Catholics from joining the Church. A former practicing attorney, Joe clearly lays out fact-supported cases to break down anti-Catholic biases and barriers. Listening has certainly strengthened my faith in the Church and its Scriptural and historical basis.
Living as a Catholic in Today’s Culture
Tune in as Bishop Robert Barron tackles tough issues, such as Christianity’s role in politics, euthanasia, and the mental health crisis. Not only does he express his positions, but he does so with love, humor, and evidence to back them up. I learn something new each time I listen to Bishop Barron.
Ascension Presents (AKA The Father Mike Schmitz Podcast)
In less than 10 minutes, Fr. Mike Schmitz describes Catholic teachings in an easy-to-digest, relatable way. He also touches on cultural issues in a Catholic context. In both cases he engages listeners with entertaining anecdotes and arguments that compel listeners—including me—to keep coming back.
If you’re interested in the latest Catholic News, check out this pod. Unbiased in its presentation, it updates listeners on both the good and bad events occurring inside both individual churches and the Vatican.
Matt Fradd, often heard advocating for chastity, hosts and isn’t shy about sharing his insights. He discusses both theological questions and cultural issues in a theological context. His frequent guests, whom he often interviews in long-form episodes, makes it unique. Some episodes last nearly three hours, but they’re well worth the time.
Digging Deep into Faith and Doctrine
In each daily episode, Fr. Mike Schmitz walks through passages in the Catholic Bible and adds his commentary, reflections, and prayer. The order of Scripture readings follows The Great Adventure Bible‘s timeline, helping shed light on God’s plan of salvation. I listened daily a couple of years ago and learned so much as I grew closer to God through His Word, which I would’ve struggled to understand without Fr. Mike’s insights.
Similar to the Bible in a Year pod, Fr. Mike walks through the Catechism of the Catholic Church in 365 days. I highly recommend it to everyone from cradle Catholics to new converts—or even non-Catholics interested in learning more about what Catholics believe. Fr. Mike adds insightful commentary that breaks the paragraphs into easily digestible chunks, keeping listeners engaged and looking forward to the next episode.
Check out this podcast from Scott Hahn, author of Rome Sweet Home, among other books. In Rome Sweet Home he details his journey to Catholicism. In The Road to Emmaus, he reveals the Biblical roots of Catholicism…roots that helped draw him into the Church to begin with. His works helped me when I was discerning whether to convert to Catholicism.
Listen to a priest’s reflection on the day’s Gospel. I’m often inspired as I listen on my drive to work, and I attempt to apply the lessons I learn in my journey through life.
Encouragement and Advice Tailored to either Women or Men
Heather, Michelle, and Sr. Miriam James Heidland provide a safe space for women to feel connected and encouraged. During the episode to which I listened, Sr. Miriam’s prayer for emotional healing caused me to tear up. Though the show is geared toward women, it’s powerful for anyone who listens.
Check out this pod if you’re interested in a holistic approach to women’s healthcare. Jamie and Teresa explain that the way women were designed is a gift that must be embraced and empowered. They give well-researched advice on how to do so.
If you’re a man who is trying to live your best life as a Catholic, check this podcast out. Following their “Be a man. Be a Saint.” slogan, the hosts provide practical insights for men who are committed to their faith.
Catholic Podcasts After a Long Day at the Office
Jimmy Akin delves into a mysterious or bizarre topic by looking at it through the perspectives of faith and reason. Topics include Bigfoot, hauntings, and murder mysteries. Jimmy peeks behind every door as he presents evidence in his search for truth—no matter how weird.
Fr. Dave and Deacon Bob allow listeners to hear their lighthearted discussions on sports, politics, and current events. They don’t take themselves too seriously as they touch on faith amidst life.
Hear two guys and a priest discuss cultural and theological issues in a Catholic context. It’s witty and entertaining, providing information—such as 10 Things You Didn’t Know About Jesus Christ—that you never knew you wanted to hear.
A Boost in your Journey Toward Heaven
I looked up the podcast title’s meaning before I listened, believing doing so would help me better digest its content. Thankfully, I was right. The Italian phrase Poco a Poco translates to “little by little”. During each episode, four priests of the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal detail how we can grow closer to the Father, little by little, on our life-long pilgrimage to His house.
Who knew that listening to Dominican friars could be so compelling? In Godsplaining, the friars discuss cultural and theological issues in easy-to-understand terms. In the process, they suggest how we can apply Catholic principles to our lives. My jaw dropped when they explained that temptation is merely Satan’s suggestion. Thinking in those terms has transformed my ability to withstand the temptations in my life.
Two former Catholic therapists dig deep into serious issues like sexual purity, marriage and divorce, parenting, and emotional healing. You’ll laugh and you’ll cry–I did both–when you hear their powerful message of hope amidst despair. Their goal is to help each of their listeners recover their own God-given glory.
