Sister Cristina is the recent winner of “The Voice” in Italy and she just released her new album “Sister Cristina”. Her first music video was a remake of the song “Like a Virgin” by Madonna.
For most of us, this is not our first time hearing the song and the music video is completely different from the original. Madonna goes around Venice as a bride; but now we see Sister Cristina, as a Bride of Christ, singing the same song in Rome.
This may be an unsettling cover of the song due to previous sexual connotations with the lyrics. Whether one likes the idea or not, her attempt seems clear and interesting: transformation, metanoia. Take something beautiful that was abused and present it to the world in a new way, in a new light, in the light of the Gospel; take the ruins of an ancient temple building, and build a Cathedral.
Sister Cristina comments on this herself, “I chose (this song). With no intention to provoke or scandalize. Reading the text, without being influenced by previous interpretations, you discover that it is a song about the power of love to renew people. To rescue them from their past. And this is the way that I wanted to interpret it. For this reason we have transformed this song from the pop-dance piece which it was, into a romantic ballad, a bit like the ones by Amos Lee. Something more similar to a lay prayer than to a pop piece.”
Sister Cristina is right— the lyrics to the song are beautiful if seen through the perspective of authentic and renewing love. She offers us a unique opportunity to remember this song as a prayer, rather than a “pop piece”.
