Why I Joined The Choir

by Mass, Testimonies

“To sing is to pray twice.” — Saint Augustine of Hippo

As a child, I sought ways to draw closer to God beyond verbal prayer. I often tagged along with my parents who were active in our choir. I would sit near my mother, asking for extra song sheets to read and follow along. Soon, I learned the songs faster than she did, sometimes even guiding her on how to sing certain parts. My mother, gracious and kind, would listen and repeat after me. Those early moments gave me confidence in my ability to hear and reproduce melodies.

At that age, I didn’t understand what Saint Augustine meant about prayer. All I knew was that when I sang, it felt as if the whole world disappeared, leaving only God and me. Singing from the depths of my heart, the lyrics—whether old or new—became my personal prayer. I found myself humming these songs throughout the day, unconsciously turning them into continuous prayers. Especially during Mass, I couldn’t imagine participating without a song sheet, because that was my closest connection to God.

Why Join The Choir?

So why join a choir or music ministry? Talent is not the main reason. I believe everyone can benefit from experiencing this ministry at least once. A committed choir practices weekly, offering a space to learn commitment—not only to oneself but also to a team. These lessons in teamwork and discipline are lifelong skills.

For those seeking alternative ways to pray, choir provides a powerful avenue. Music allows us to express our deepest desires and needs to God more vividly than words alone. Sharing this experience with a group of like-minded people fosters belonging. Acts 2:44 says, “All the believers were together and had everything in common.” Choir can create this sense of community, offering connection and fellowship for those who may long for a family-like bond in faith.

Community is another compelling reason to join. Choir offers a space to experience shared purpose and creativity. Members often carry a passion for music and for God that is inspiring; simply being in the same room can ignite a spark in your own heart. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us, “Two are better than one… If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.” In choir life, this is evident: when a member is absent, others notice, wait for them, and support them. This accountability and care can sustain a person throughout life, even in challenging times.

There are countless reasons to join a choir, but for me, it is a space where I grow in faith and connect deeply with my identity as a child of God. Through this ministry, I discovered my passion for music and opened my heart to God in new ways. I started playing guitar and creating my own songs of praise and personal expression. Music has become a tool for regulating my emotions, helping me remain calm and at peace with myself and those around me—a practice that supports my growth into adulthood.

Joining a choir or music ministry is more than just singing; it is a journey of faith, growth, and community. Through music, we learn commitment, discover our passions, and connect deeply with God and with others. It is a space where our prayers take flight, our hearts find a sense of belonging, and our talents become gifts shared in service to God. For me, choir has been a place of learning, support, and joy—a ministry that nurtures both the spirit and the soul.

If your heart is stirred, consider taking that step. Open your voice, open your heart, and let music become your prayer. As Saint Augustine reminds us, singing truly is twice the prayer—practicing and sharing it amplifies our devotion in ways words alone cannot. By joining, you are not only enriching your own faith, but also becoming part of a living, breathing community that praises God together.
