Born Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli on November 25, 1881 in Sotto Il Monte in the province of Lombardy, Italy. As the oldest son of Giovanni Battista Roncalli and Marianna Giulia Mazzola.

On March 3, 1925 Pope Pius XI appointed him titular archbishop of Areopolis, Jordan and on November 30, 1934 appointed Apostolic Delegate to Turkey and Greece and titular archbishop of Mesembria, Bulgaria.

On November 29, 1952, Pope Pius XII elevated Roncalli to the Cardinalate and appointed to lead the patriarchy of Venice.

After Pius XII died, the conclave elected Roncalli on October 28, 1958 and he took the name John XXIII.

John XXIII is known well for calling the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II) on January 25, 1959 and this came as a surprise to the bishops. The Second Vatican Council opened on October 11, 1962.

He died on June 3, 1963 and Pope Saint Paul VI succeeded him.
