Born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger on April 16, 1927, Holy Saturday in his parents home in Marktl, Bavaria. The third and youngest child of Joseph Ratzinger Sr., a police officer, and Maria Ratzinger (Peintner). Baptized the same day.

Joseph Jr. and his younger brother Georg entered Saint Michael Seminary in Traunstein in November 1945. They received the sacrament of Holy Orders in Freising on June 29, 1951.

Joseph Ratzinger taught at the University of Bonn, 1959 in 1959 and participated in the Second Vatican Council and served as theological consultant to Cardinal Frings of Cologne.

John Paul II died April 2, 2005 and the Conclave elected him on April 19, 2005 and he chose the name Benedict XVI.

He wrote three encyclicals and many books which aid people come to know Christ more personally.

As his health declined, he discerned resignation. On February 11, 2013 he resigned on Pope Francis succeeded him. Benedict died on December 28, 2022.
