This is the current Pope, as of this recording. As such, this episode is not so much an analysis of his papacy. Rather, it looks at Pope Francis’ background before the Papacy.
Born Jorge Mario Bergolio on December 17, 1936 as the eldest of five children to Mario Jose Bergoglio and Regina Maria Sivori. Jorge recieved a chemical technician’s diploma from Escuela Tecnica Industrial Number 27 Hipolito Yrigoren. At 21 years old, part of Jorge’s lung removed due to life-threatening pneumonia and three cysts.
Jorge discerned his Vocation to the priesthood after an encounter in confession. He entered the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) on March 11, 1958.
Bergoglio became a Cardinal on February 21, 2001 and elected Pope on March 13, 2013.
