Pope Pius IV died and Charles Borromeo favored Antonio’s election. The Cardinals elected Antonio pope and he took the name Pope Pius V on January 8, 1566.
Pius V attempted to squash the spread of Protestantism and the advance of Turkish armies in the East. He promulgated the canons and decrees of the Council of Trent. He standardized the Holy Bible and promulgated the 1570 edition of the Roman Missal.
On May 1, 1572, the Pope died and suffered from bladder stones. Pope Gregory XIII succeeded him.
