Pope Pius IV, born Giovanni Angelo Medici in Milan, Italy on March 31, 1499, succeeded Pope Paul IV and became pope on December 25, 1559. Giovanni received a doctorate in both canon and civil law on May 11, 1525. Pope Paul III made Giovanni a cardinal on April 8, 1549. Paul IV died on August 18, 1559. The Papal Conclave elected Giovanni on December 25, 1559 and he took the name Pius IV.
Pope Julius III suspended the Council of Trent, but the Pope reconvened the Council in January 1562 for the third and final time. Cardinal Morone and St. Charles Borromeo, his nephew, aided him in the Council. The papal bull Benedictus Deus, dated January 26, 1564 confirmed the definitions and decrees of the Council.
During his papacy, Michelangelo rebuilt the basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli (Diocletian’s Baths).
The Pope died on December 9, 1565 and found in Santa Maria degli Angeli. Pope Pius V succeeded him.
