How To Find The Peace Of Christ During The Stress Of Christmas

by Christmas, Liturgical Seasons, Self-Knowledge

This exceptionally well-done clip from The Skit Guys on Peace in the Advent season may take you by surprise if you are a frequent viewer of videos by Tommy Woodward and Eddie James. The Skit Guys, friends since high school, are known more for their hilarious videos that provide a starting place for great Christian discussions. However, they have decided to take a more serious and thoughtful approach to create a wonderful series of Advent videos that can easily be used in the classroom, a small group study, or on retreat to help us overcome Christmas stress.

The Skit Guys gently remind us that God is our peace. Our culture offers a million different methods for achieving inner peace, but there is only one true source of peace. During the hustle and bustle of the Advent season, even those of us who are deeply rooted in our relationship with Christ may have trouble maintaining that Peace that can only come from God. Who except God can give you peace?

Has the world ever been able to satisfy the heart? Saint Gerard Majella

It is evident in the way we speak to one another that our lives lack peace. More often than not, when I ask someone how they are doing after Mass, the reply is “busy”. I noticed myself saying it as well. Busy. It’s almost as if we have become proud of our busyness. The busier we are, the more important we must be. Our value has been determined by the number of things we do, small groups we lead, service projects we organize, and committees we chair.

Advent Peace

Never be in a hurry; do everything quietly and in a calm spirit. Do not lose your inner peace for anything whatsoever, even if your whole world seems upset. St. Francis de Sales

These are all good things and worthy of our time, but we have glorified the Martha (Luke 10:38-42) mentality in our Churches and forget about the importance of being a Mary. God is looking for our holiness, not our busyness. He desires us to be a people of peace. “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (John 14:27)

Reclaim the peace that God wants to bring to you this Advent

Look over your long Christmas to-do list. Some of the items on the list are essentials but find a couple that can be crossed off. Spending hours baking homemade cookies might result in delicious treats, but it’s not a requirement for getting you into heaven. Store-bought cookies may be just as good this year. Take the time you would have spent making them to go to Adoration and sit in peace with Our Lord. When the family asks where the cookies are, tell them you took the time to pray for them and for peace in their lives instead of baking. Find something on that to-do list that you can replace and go spend time with Jesus.

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Is 9:6

NOTE:

What is Adoration? Eucharistic Adoration is adoring Jesus in the Eucharist. During Eucharistic Adoration, we are truly in the presence of Christ. You can spend time reading spiritual books, meditating, praying the rosary or just sitting with Jesus. Many churches have a special chapel devoted to this form of prayer. Call around to local Churches to find one that offers times for Eucharistic Adoration. There are many that offer this around the clock. You don’t have to make a Holy Hour, even a few minutes is okay. Make the time as long or as short as you desire. Making Adoration a part of your prayer time will provide a great sense of peace.
