Why Do Catholics Light Votive Candles?

Votive candles are candles lit for intercession, usually for a particular intention. The idea behind a votive candle is that, as human beings, we cannot stay in church and pray all day, even if we want to. Therefore, we light a candle as an offering, saying, “Lord, I can’t offer my time because I have other duties, but I can offer this candle. May it burn in your presence as a symbol of my desire to be in your presence, praying.”
