Corporals are ordinarily square in shape, and they’re the linen that is opened on top of the altar before the priest consecrates the bread and the wine. It’s called a Corporal because it is meant to catch the Corpus or body of Christ that may break off of the host during the course of the mass. The Corporal is opened up in a very particular way.
