Born Giovanni Maria Mastai Ferretti on May 13, 1292 in Senigallia as the ninth childe in a noble family of Girolamo dei Conti Ferretti and Caterina Antonia Maddalena Solazzi di Fano.

He received his education at Piarist College in Volterra and in Rome. He received the sacrament of Holy Orders in April 10, 1891.

Gregory XVI died and a conclave ensued. Cardinal Ferretti became pope in 1846 and chose the name Pius IX. During his pontificate, Pope Pius IX named three new Doctors of the Church: Hilary of Poitiers, Alphonsus Liguori and Francis de Sales.

Pius IX issued apostolic constitution Ineffabilis Deus, which definined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception on December 8, 1854.

War in Europe erupted and Italy eventually captured the papal states in 1860.

The Pope began the First Vatican Council in 1869, but the council was interrupted when further conflict broke out within Europe and Italian troops marched into Rome.

He died February 7, 1878 and Pope Leo XIII succeeded him.
