In this Habemus Papam Recap 5, Fr. Conrad recaps some of the more important events in the last 15 episodes. Those include the Avignon Papacy and Western Schism, the controversies around Conciliarism and Gallicanism, the Protestant Reformation, the French Revolution, to name a few.
In this period in the History of the Church, we saw the Pope’s role in society become more of a secular power, rather than the successor of Peter and Vicar of Christ. The European powers began, in turn, to see the Pope as merely one of the many rulers in Europe. After the French Revolution, the Pope’s secular power decreased, which helped emphasize the spiritual and moral authority of the Pope in the modern era.
