Born Giovanni Vincenzo Antonio Ganganelli on October 31, 1705 as the second child of Lorenzo Ganganelli and Angela Serafina Maria Mazza. He received his education from the Society of Jesus at Rimini. He entered the Order of Friars Minor Conventual on May 15, 1723 in Flori and took the name Lorenzo Francesco. Later, he obtained a doctorate in theology in 1731.

He received the Sacrament of Holy Orders around this time and he taught philosophy and theology in Ascoli, Bologna, and Milan.

pope Clement XIII elevated Ganganelli to cardinalate on September 24, 1759. On May 19, 1769 Ganganelli became pope and he took the name Clement XIV in honor of the pope who made him a Cardinal.

Pope Clement XIV gave into pressures from European powers to suppress the Jesuits.

He received Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his father Leopold Mozart in audience. Wolfgang Mozart displayed to Clement XIV his musical abilities.

The Pope received extreme unction on September 21, 1774 and he died on September 22, 1774. Pope Pius VI succeeded him.
