Born, Ippolito Aldobrandini on February 24, 1536 to a Florentine family who had a lawyer for a father. He also became a canon lawyer and auditor of the Roman Rota. Ippolito received the sacrament of Holy Orders on December 31, 1580 from the future Pope Leo XI.
Pope Sixtus V appointed Ippolito Cardinal-Priest of S. Pancrazio in 1585. He placed himself under the spiritual direction of Saint Philip Neri.
Pope Innocent IX died in 1591 and a stormy conclave ensured. The conclave elected Ippolito on January 30, 1592 and he took a non-politicized name, Clement VIII.
He had an unlimited capacity for work and a lawyer’s eye for detail. In November 1592, Clement published the Clementine Vulgate edition of the bible.
