Born Giacomo Paolo Giovanni Battista della Chiesa on November 21, 1854 in Genoa, Italy as the third son and sixth child of Marchese Giuseppe della Chiesa and Marchesa Giovanna Migliorati.

Giacomo’s father insisted that he study law. He did, though, after he received his legal education he entered the Collegio Capranica in Rome to receive his priestly education. He received the Sacrament of Holy Orders on December 21, 1878 at the Lateran basilica by Cardinal Raffaele Monaco La Valletta.

Pope Pius X consecrated Giacomo as Archbishop of Bologna on December 18, 1907. Pope Pius X died in 1914 and on September 3, 1914 the conclave elected Giacomo and he took the name Benedict XV.

Benedict XV strove for peace among the warring nations during the pontificate.

He caught a cold in early January 1922 and died on January 22 and Pius XI succeeded him.
