Headlines can be rough—another disaster, political hustle, crisis… but a very recent one recently that set a much different tone.
A pro-life song by an eighteen-year-old country singer, Rachel Holt, has been rising on the charts. In fact, this is her first single after signing to her Nashville label, Baste. She is proving that songs with Christian-Catholic values are not restricted to the Christian/religious genre.
In just one day, Holt’s song ranks #1 on the iTunes Country Music list. She is so new that as of now her YouTube only has one music video (for this very song). Her small bio on YouTube states that she’s from small-town America, raised with “strong traditional American and Christian values,” and comes from a bluegrass, musical family.
“I Was Gonna Be” is bittersweet, respectfully and honestly giving a voice to unborn children. It is mournful and hopeful at the same time, bringing to light the wonder and chance that was lost with the end of life.
I hope the world sees in it the love of the pro-life movement for each mother and unborn baby and that minds are changed simply by the love felt in her voice as she sings the words lost lives of the unborn never had a chance to say out loud. The lyrics are included below for you.
If you have had an abortion and need healing, please consider reaching out to your local parish community, spiritual director, faithful OB-GYN, or one of the many resources listed on the USCCB website, including Project Rachel, which is “open to all… people of all faiths or no faith.”
Thank you, Rachel Holt, for this beautiful tribute to the loss of unborn lives!
I Was Gonna Be – Rachel Holt
Lyrics To I Was Gonna Be – Rachel Holt
Some don’t believe I’m a living soul
Just a bad mistake that needs to go
If my mama coulda just seen my face
Maybe she woulda had me anyway
There are those who speak for me
Who fight for lives that they can’t see
But there are some who only mourn?
This life of mine if I were born?
All I wanted was a chance
To learn to love and laugh and dance
But I was gone before I arrived
Sent back to heaven on a starlight flight
Yeah I was gonna change the world
I was gonna be a girl
The first thing I was gonna do
Was breathe and fall in love with you
But a couple weeks before I saw the light
Mine flickered out when you changed your mind
All I wanted was a chance
To learn to love and laugh and dance
But I was gone before I arrived
Sent back to heaven on a starlight flight
I was gonna have some pretty curls
Yeah I was gonna be a boy
I’m more than just some one night stand
Or some burden that you think I am
And there ain’t no man ever gonna be
What I was gonna be
Some don’t believe I’m a living soul
Just a bad mistake that needs to go
Not A Mistake
Unborn babies are not a “bad mistake that needs to go,” even if diagnosed with a medical issue or conceived in violence. And, if you were conceived in less-than-ideal circumstances, I want you to know that your life is worth living, from conception to natural death.
I am so glad you–yes, you, the one reading this right now–were born!
