You and your children’s guardian angels
When you hear the words ‘guardian angel’, what comes to mind? Often, when we think about angels, we picture a little cherub with rosy cheeks and soft wings, maybe playing the harp and lounging on a cloud. Harmless and pretty… but what if I told you that angels are warriors? What if I told you that calling on my children’s guardian angels is like sending a fleet of ancient swordsmen to protect them at all costs?
Guardian angels are warriors; they carry a sword to defend you and a shield to protect you. Your guardian angel is a soldier who goes to war for your soul every single day. He is a warrior who defends you to the death. Your guardian angel chose you. And they chose you with the aim of getting you into heaven.
Now, as parents, we have the aim of getting our kids into heaven. We aren’t here to make our kids happy; we are here to make them holy. If we let our kids do whatever they want, making life comfortable and happy all the time with no chores, not having to eat healthy food, no responsibility or obedience, we wouldn’t be good parents. And that’s because love guides. Love corrects. Love redirects. That’s the kind of love our guardian angels have for us. They direct us, intercede for us, and protect us as warriors. They know it’s our soul at stake, and they battle the devil for it every day.
Padre Pio & Guardian Angels
Saint Padre Pio listed ways to stay close to your guardian angel. He said to pray to your guardian angel for guidance because God has given him to you for that reason, so use him! Ask him for clarity in trials and direction in decisions. Padre Pio reminded people that guardian angels are always at your side, so just the thought of remembering their presence and acknowledging them as your heavenly protector who never abandons you can keep you close. Padre Pio also told us, “Your guardian angel prays for you; he offers to God all your good works and your desires.” This tells us our guardian angels are intercessors for us! And as a parent, you can pray to your child’s guardian angel and send them ahead or to them. You can invoke the angels.
Angels In The Bible
In the Bible, Jesus refers to angels of the children in Matthew, and again they are mentioned in other places. Jesus was watched over by angels, and He said He could call them down at a moment’s notice. Matthew tells us that when Jesus was at the start of His Ministry and was in the wilderness being tempted, and the devil left, angels came and ministered to Him (Matthew 4:11). Then at the end of Jesus’ Ministry in the garden of Gethsemane, an angel appeared to Him and strengthened Him (Luke 22:43).
The Bible actually names 3 angels. St. Michael, who defends us against the devil and evil; St. Gabriel, a messenger of God; and St. Raphael, a healer and protector. So folks, angels are real! And you can count on your guardian angel.
St John Vianney said, “Our guardian angels are our most faithful friends, because they are with us day and night, always and everywhere. We ought often to invoke them.”
So when you go to bed at night, pray in thanks for your guardian angel and your children’s guardian angels.
When you or your children feel tempted, pray to your guardian angel.
When you or your children are making a decision, when you’re in the trials of life, on top of the mountain or down in the valley – pray to your guardian angel.
He is a best friend. Always at your side. Always guiding, protecting, and interceding for you. And remember, your guardian angel isn’t some cute-looking cherub with a harp. No, no, no, he is a strong, tall, rugged looking warrior with a shield to protect you in one hand a sword to fight for you in the other. He is a gladiator, an army general who directs and executes. He will protect you all your days, intercede for you before the Lord, and be ever constant by your side.
