St. Paul VI

Pope Paul VI, born Giovanni Battista Montini on September 26, 1897, in Italy, served as the head of the Catholic Church and the sovereign of Vatican City from June 21, 1963, until his death on August 6, 1978. Known for his deep commitment to the Church's mission in the modern world, Pope Paul VI is perhaps best remembered for his courageous continuation of the Second Vatican Council after the death of his predecessor, John XXIII. He not only saw the Council through to its conclusion in 1965 but also took on the challenging task of implementing its many reforms, guiding the Church through a time of significant transformation.
