Saint Mother Theodore Guerin

Anne Thérèse Guérin, S.P. (October 2, 1798 – May 14, 1856), known in the Catholic Church as Saint Theodora, was a French-born American saint and the foundress of the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. This congregation of Catholic sisters is based at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods, Indiana. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 25, 1998, and canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI on October 15, 2006. Her feast day is celebrated on October 3, although the Roman Martyrology also lists it as May 14, the date of her death.

Guérin immigrated to Indiana from France in 1840. She became well known for advancing education, particularly in Indiana and eastern Illinois, where she founded numerous schools. She also established Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana. Beyond education, she devoted herself to caring for orphans, the sick, and the poor throughout the Diocese of Vincennes, Indiana.
