Watch the Historic Spread of World Religions in this 2 Minute Video

by Catholic Church, History of the Church, World's View

Besides the cultural interest, the video could provide you with an opportunity to explain the importance of locating ourselves within history. Ever since God became man and, in doing so, inserted himself in a particular way in our time, history has become an even more important consideration. When I say, “I believe” (the Creed), I am accepting something more than some abstract set of beliefs or some kind of moral code for how I am going to live my life.

Rather, I am entering into a movement that has been alive and developing for generations (and continues to do so) and goes beyond, while including, the scope of myself or my individual parish. Our creed is the fruit of God’s action and the response of particular men and women in various places and in diverse moments throughout history.

Nothing could be farther from an abstract philosophy or some ideology drawn up at a desk than our faith. The faith is based on and is the consequence of real events in history. There’s plenty more to be said and precisions to be made; nevertheless, I’ll leave it at that for now. If you would like to read more on the subject, I would suggest reading a book by Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI) called Truth and Tolerance. The section on Faith, Religion, and Culture is very interesting.

Something to keep in mind, just so there is no confusion, the presentation makes no distinction between the Catholic Church and the Protestant denominations. Purple represents all Christain denominations.
