Jim Gaffigan’s Favorite Marian Apparition

Juan Diego‘s uncle did not go on to invent the burrito, but the rest of this retelling of Our Lady of Guadalupe is pretty accurate! The Blessed Mother did indeed appear to Juan Diego, and he found himself tasked with delivering the very important message to the bishop, who demanded proof of its authenticity, that a church should be built. The Virgin instructed St. Juan Diego to ascend the hill, gather some roses, and present them to the bishop. Despite the unusual timing in December, Juan Diego did not hesitate. Securing the out-of-season roses in his tilma, a cloak worn by impoverished Mexican Indians, he carried them to the bishop as a symbol of Our Lady’s desire for a church to be built. Upon unveiling the tilma before the bishop, a miraculous revelation occurred: not only were the roses present despite the season, but the image of the Virgin was imprinted on the tilma itself, leaving the bishop astonished.

Many conversions, miracles, and stories of increased faith have occurred because of one man’s humble obedience and Our Lady’s intercession. Today, each year, over twenty million pilgrims visit the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and continue to experience the graces of this apparition.
