Oops my iPhone 5 Broke! Why? Because the iPhone 6 Just Came Out!

by Self-Knowledge, World's View

As the release of Apple’s iPhone 6 is just around the corner, we figured that this video is just what the doctor ordered. It was produced by Big Lazy Robot VFX, a company that, in reality, loves robots and technology but decided to produce this video in order to “laugh at [themselves]”. It all serves, they say,  the purpose of creating a dumb homogeneous atmosphere in which we’re defined by what we’ve got, that is, the same lame things.

One of the interesting aspects of the video, besides its playful criticism of technology and of a screen-obsesed society that overly dedicates itself to pointless amusement (not bad in itself, always in moderation), is simply the idea of where we focus our attention. Everything is going well until someone passes by to remind us that what we have isn’t the best. Boom! Suddenly my phone stinks and my life would be undoubtedly better with a new one.

There is a real danger when these things become so absorbing, so utterly important, so self-defining that we lose sight and ignore everything else.  How important is your cellphone, your computer, your car, your house, etc. to you, to your self-image, to your relationship with others, to yourself and to God? Are you as worried about your prayer life as much as you are about the new update? What’s more “urgent” in your life?

Usually, my theory on these things is that which presents itself as the MOST URGENT– especially when they pay millions to convince me– isn’t. Period.

The Joys Of A Large Catholic Family

Imagine this: a car full of chatter and laughter as twelve siblings are on their way to Mass. Some are reading the day's reading, some are whispering jokes, and others are quietly reflecting. Mass was central to our lives growing up in a family with 12 children. My...

Eucharistic Miracles And The Real Presence Of Christ

Eucharistic Miracles And The Real Presence Of Christ

Marital Truth Hurts — But Love Rejoices In It

Marital Truth Hurts — But Love Rejoices In It

We live in an age where truth has been softened into preference. “My truth” and “your truth” sound generous, almost enlightened, but beneath the language is a deeper confusion: truth has been reduced to feeling. It has become negotiable, therapeutic, and adjustable....
