How To Pray The Divine Mercy Chaplet: Your Step By Step Visual Guide

by Prayer, Saints

What is the Divine Mercy Chaplet?

Sister Faustina Kowalska was a nun who received visions from Jesus Himself. After a particular vision on September 13, 1935, she began to share a prayer that Jesus taught her. The account of that vision can still be found in her diary, where she writes that Jesus said:

“When they say this chaplet in the presence of the dying, I will stand between My Father and the dying person, not as a just Judge but as a merciful Saviour”.

With these words, we’re reminded of the way that Jesus comes to our aid again and again. Throughout history, we see how He has fulfilled that promise of staying with us till the end of time due to his infinite love for us.

Saint Faustina describes her vision :

“I saw an Angel, the executor of divine wrath (…) they were striking the earth (…) I found myself pleading with God for the world with words heard interiorly. As I was praying in this manner, I saw the Angel’s helplessness: he could not carry out the just punishment”.

The next day, a voice inside her taught her the prayer of Divine Mercy. Follow the 5 steps to learn how to pray it yourself.

How to Pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet

  1. Begin By Holding Your Rosary

We start this chaplet by making the sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

Then we continue with an Our Father, a Hail Mary, and the Creed using the first three beads of the rosary.

  1. The Large Bead

On the bigger bead, where we usually pray the Our Father, we say the following prayer:

“Eternal Father, I offer You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world”.

  1. The Following Beads

On the following beads, where we usually pray the Hail Mary, we say the following prayer:

“For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world”. We repeat this pattern of prayer throughout the five decades of the rosary.

  1. At the End of Your Rosary Beads

When we finish the five decades of the rosary with the prayers we’ve mentioned above, we say the following final prayer three times:

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.”

As with every prayer, we end with the Divine Mercy Chaplet with the sign of the Cross: In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, Amen.

“Say unceasingly the chaplet that I have taught you. Whoever will recite it will receive great mercy at the hour of death. Priests will recommend it to sinners as their last hope of salvation. Even if there were a sinner most hardened, if he were to recite this chaplet only once, he would receive grace from My infinite mercy. I desire that the whole world know My infinite mercy. I desire to grant unimaginable graces to those souls who trust in My mercy” (Saint Faustina’s diary).
