Catholic Review: St. Bernadette’s Grit, Guts, And Grace

by April, Movie Reviews and Recommendations, Saints

The drama of this saint’s story arrives to U.S. cinemas September 28 and 29.

Every live theater lover longs for a remarkable and spellbinding connection during the show. Bernadette of Lourdes: The Musical offers exactly that—a spectacular work for both the faithful and the secular, carrying the audience into the very heart of a story that continues to inspire across centuries.

The stage-to-screen adaptation tells the 1858 story of the Marian apparitions to a poor miller’s daughter, Bernadette Soubirous, in Lourdes, France. Far from being a tale lost in history, her witness remains a present-day reminder of the power of love, purpose, and grit in the walk of faith.

The lead role, played with grace and conviction by the French singer Eyma Scharen, brings to life the journey of this humble peasant girl—tender, witty, and unassuming, yet chosen by heaven for a divine mission. As the musical beautifully affirms, her hidden purpose was already buried within her, waiting to be revealed.

And that is the true beauty of this film: it doesn’t just show a miracle, but the soul of the girl who bore it. The film masterfully depicts the crucible of public scrutiny, persecution, and ridicule that engulfed Bernadette. From the authorities to her own mother, all demanded signs and answers. The devil himself tempted her with wealth and fame.

Yet, with a quiet strength, Bernadette stood firm: “I’m not afraid, because I’ve always told the truth.” This steadfastness is the heart of her story. When pressed by both her family’s fear and the clergy’s doubt, her faith was not in the reward, but in the truth. Her constancy was not broken. She has a certain grit about her that’s both palpable and inspiring.

When asked the Lady’s name, Eyma’s answer, as Bernadette, was both simple and profound: “Que soy era Immaculada Councepciou.” — I am the Immaculate Conception. In this moment, her heroic obedience shone through, revealing a soul of angelic sweetness and divine purity.

Bernadette’s true beauty is, as is Our Lady, interior, holy, and constant. She remains a radiant example of a soul that rests in profound humility and refuses to be shaken, no matter the worldly pressure. Her unwavering fidelity to God’s promptings showed her love as constant and disinterested, which reveals a truth for us all: true beauty flows from a complete surrender to God’s designs.

Bernadette of Lourdes: The Musical is a narrative of courage, love, and divine purpose. It’s a film for the faithful seeking an encounter that deepens devotion and for the skeptic who needs to see universal virtues like humility, perseverance, and constancy in action. It proves that when disbelief surrounds us, faith can still rise higher.

Bernadette was poor, uneducated, and frail—yet chosen. And in that choice, she revealed to the world the true beauty of a soul surrendered to God. Her story of grit, guts, and grace leaves us with a question: When pressed by ridicule and temptation, will we remain faithful?

Bernadette of Lourdes, The Musical premieres in U.S. Theaters September 28 & 29, from Fathom Entertainment and Pathé Live. This release providentially marks the 100th anniversary of Her Beatification.
