We have made it to the 100th pope! A beloved but short-lived Pope.

Transcript:
Hey everyone, first off the bat, this isn’t the same Valentine as Valentine’s Day. This is Pope Valentine. He’s not technically a canonized saint and we just don’t know too much about him. He was of Roman origin. He was born around 795, most likely of an aristocratic family. He entered the church service at a young age. He was ordained a sub deacon@25 by Saint Paschal the First. And then very soon after that, he was ordained a deacon, and then he was made the archdeacon. He continued in that role under Pope Eugene ii and he was particularly noted for his kindness and affability. He was loved, apparently, by everyone. When Eugene ii died in 827, the people of Rome and the clergy were gathered all together in one place. And then they either heard a voice from the sky or they all suddenly cried out together, Valentine must be Pope. And so they rushed off to St. Mary Major, where they discovered Valentine praying in the church and they force him to become Pope. They then carry him off, despite his protest, to St John Lateran, where they enthroned him and had him consecrated. But Valentine’s pontificate unfortunately was very short lived. He died after a rain of only 40 days. He was probably buried in St. Peter’s but we don’t have any record of the location of his tomb. Pope Valentine was succeeded by Pope Gregory iv, but we’re not going to get to him next week. This is our 100th pope, so that means next week we’re going to take some time and look back after 100 popes or in 800 years of the church, do a little recap episode and then we’ll get into Gregory IV in two weeks. Thanks for listening to Habeemus Papam. You can check out the rest of the Catholic Bites podcast at catholicbytespodcast. Com There you can find all our other podcasts.
