8 Podcasts For Catholic Dads

by Catholic Media, Family

As fathers, as Catholic men, what are we doing with our free time? Certainly, there are many activities which can help us grow in virtue. And there are many activities which are distractions or diversions. These activities have their place, but are they truly recreation? In other words, are they re-creating us? Are they making us new? Are they building us up in virtue?

As Catholic men, it is important to continue to grow in our knowledge and love of the Faith. One easy way to grow in knowledge and be challenged with ideas and suggestions is to listen to Podcasts. Perhaps you already listen to Podcasts. These can become a distraction if consumed without moderation, just as anything else. But, when we do listen to Podcasts, what are we consuming? Is it building up virtue, stagnating us, or leading us into vice?

As fathers, we need to receive, if we are going to give to our wife and children. We need to be taught and formed, if we are going to teach and form. This begins for us in the school of prayer, but in the third millennium, Podcasts can be a great source of inspiration.

Here are a few of my favorites that can help you grow as the leader of your domestic church. These are an assortment of Podcast made by Catholic men who desire to be faithful to Christ and His Church.

No one is perfect, and so we do not condone everything said by these gentlemen nor do we approve of the language in each, every topic covered, and so forth. Some of these shows are great for you, as a Catholic man. Some can be listened to freely with children present. And some are good for all audiences.

I will simply use the following rating system, of my own invention, in parentheses next to the title of the Podcast: Geared to Men (M), Always Appropriate for All Audiences (E), and Geared to Adults (A). Then I will put the summary that the creators give their Podcasts and where they can be found.

The Art of Catholic With Matthew Leonard(E), What’s it about? The Catholic spiritual life is Matthew’s favorite topic – prayer and spirituality. That being said, he talks about all kinds of aspects and issues of the faith, oftentimes interviewing authors on incredibly diverse topics from around the Catholic universe. https://matthewsleonard.com/podcast-2/

(Author’s Note: Matthew Leonard is a compelling speaker and the Founder of Next Level Catholic Academy. He is a deeply prayerful man and passionate. And he is a convert with a heart on fire for our Blessed Mother. Check him out!)

Catching Foxes(A; occasional profanity), Luke and Gomer became friends Freshman year at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and 14 years later they started a podcast. The show oscillates between a conversation between just the two of us and interviews that we do together of other, fancier people. Sometimes we get explicit either by being too honest or by being too stupid. Either way, it’s fun! https://www.catchingfoxes.fm

(Author’s Note: I don’t always agree with Luke and Gomer’s take on the Church and the world. But, they are clearly faithful and desire to do the work of God in the world. They are fun to listen to and aren’t trying to prove anything. Very refreshingly genuine.)

The Catholic Man Show(M), Promoting the lost art of virtuous living in a watered down society. Adam and David come together for a weekly conversation that involves: 1.) A Man Drink 2.) A Man Gear 3.) A Man topic. WARNING: THIS SHOW CONTAINS HIGH LEVELS OF MANLINESS! https://thecatholicmanshow.com

(Author’s Note: Full disclosure, I have not listened to many Catholic Man Show episodes, but I love what I have heard. I will be diving more into this one, personally.)

The Counsel of Trent(A), You’ve probably heard me explain Catholicism to non-Catholic callers on the radio or engage opponents in formal, public debates. I always hoped these interactions would show believers how to graciously defend and share our faith. But they’re not enough. That’s why I’m creating a podcast that will help Catholics answer the toughest objections against our faith. These episodes of The Counsel of Trent will provide listeners with a “conversation roadmap” that will help them share their Catholic faith with anyone. https://www.patreon.com/counseloftrent

(Author’s Note: Trent is one of the most prolific authors and Podcasters of our time. He releases multiple short episodes per week and is a fantastic apologist and is an unapologetic Catholic.)

The Fr. Mike Schmitz Catholic Podcast(E), Faith, pop culture, and headline from Fr. Mike Schmitz. https://media.ascensionpress.com/category/ascension-podcasts/frmikepodcast/

(Author’s Note: These short Podcasts from a good and holy priest cover the topics that you want to know more about, guaranteed. Fr. Mike speaks to the heart of the matter in an easy to understand way.)

Liturgy Guys(E), A Catholic podcast that tells you everything you wanted to know about the Mass and more! https://liturgyguys.podbean.com

(Author’s note: This is by far the greatest and best of all Podcasts ever created, in my humble opinion. Okay, maybe that’s a bit of a stretch. Seriously though, I have learned more about the Liturgy from this Podcast than almost any other one source. Great stuff from the Liturgical Institute!)

The Matt Fradd Show(A), The Matt Fradd Show is a long form conversation hosted by Matt Fradd with friends and guests that have included philosophers, historians, apologists, and theologians. Subscribe on YouTube so you don’t miss an episode. https://www.youtube.com/channel/UClh4JeqYB1QN6f1h_bzmEng/featured

(Author’s Note: I have been a personal supporter of Matt from the beginning of Pints With Aquinas and now the Matt Fradd Show. He is a former apologist with Catholic Answers. He has had some amazing guests on the Matt Fradd Show and continues to make Pints With Aquinas better and better.)

Pints With Aquinas (A; review episodes for topic before allowing children to listen) – Matt Fradd, Premise: “If you could sit down with Thomas Aquinas over a pint of beer and ask him any one question, what would it be?” https://pintswithaquinas.com
