The True Presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist is one of the greatest mysteries of our Catholic faith. It is something that can be very difficult for us to understand.
How does what appears to be a piece of bread and a cup of wine become the Body and Blood of our Lord? Embracing this concept requires us to truly believe the words of Jesus, “Amen, amen I say unto you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you shall not have life in you.” (John 6:56)
We are not alone when we don’t fully understand this mystery or when we begin to doubt the true presence of Christ in the Eucharist. “I believe, help my unbelief” is one prayer that will help you through this. Spending time in front of the Blessed Sacrament will also help you grow in your devotion to, understanding of, and desire for the Eucharist.
For centuries, people have been working to prove or disprove the presence of Christ in the Sacred Host. Though rare, there are recorded miracles of the Eucharist. 1. Amsterdam Miracle
- Date: 1345
- Location: Amsterdam, Netherlands
- Summary: After a dying man vomited the Eucharist and it was thrown into a fire, the Host was later found intact, unburned, and incorrupt, resting in a pool of light.
2. Bolsena (Orvieto) Miracle
- Date: 1263
- Location: Bolsena, Italy
- Summary: A priest doubting transubstantiation saw the consecrated Host begin to bleed during Mass, staining the altar cloth and strengthening belief in the Real Presence.
3. Siena Hosts Miracle
- Date: 1730 (with later events in 1950–1951)
- Location: Siena, Italy
- Summary: Consecrated Hosts stolen and later recovered were found to remain perfectly preserved and incorrupt for decades—defying natural decomposition even under scientific testing.
4. St. Anthony and the Donkey
- Date: 13th century (during the life of St. Anthony)
- Location: Likely Rimini, Italy (traditional account)
- Summary: A starving donkey ignored food and instead knelt in reverence before the Eucharist when commanded by St. Anthony, leading a skeptic to convert.
5. Buenos Aires Miracle
- Date: 1996
- Location: Buenos Aires, Argentina
- Summary: A discarded Host placed in water transformed into a bloody substance later identified through blind scientific analysis as living human heart tissue under stress.
6. Avignon (Aenon) Miracle
- Date: 1433
- Location: Avignon, France
- Summary: During severe flooding, a church left unattended remained miraculously protected, with a dry path leading to the intact and untouched exposed Host inside.
