Recently, we ran a poll asking what type of content you’d like to see from us, and the response was overwhelming: you wanted recommendations for good TV shows suitable for Catholics. Now, that’s a bit of a challenge, as finding TV shows that align with Catholic values can be tricky. However, I believe I’ve stumbled upon a gem that’s worth discussing: “Jane the Virgin”.
Before diving in, let me confess: my wife and I are only halfway through season 2, but I feel I’ve gathered enough insights to share with you all.
Should Catholics Watch Jane The Virgin?
“Jane the Virgin” revolves around the life of Jane, a devout Catholic who is committed to maintaining her virginity until marriage. However, her world turns upside down when she is accidentally artificially inseminated during a routine medical procedure. What ensues is a rollercoaster of events that kept us hooked from the start.
One of the aspects that intrigued me about the show was its portrayal of Catholicism. While not flawless, the depiction of Jane’s faith journey feels authentic. Her grandmother, a devout Catholic, adds depth to the religious aspect of the show. We witness moments of prayer, including scenes where Jane and her family turn to God in times of need.
However, the show doesn’t shy away from portraying the messiness of life. Jane, like any human being, grapples with challenges and occasionally makes choices that may raise eyebrows. Yet, what stands out is her unwavering commitment to her values, particularly regarding chastity.
What impressed me most was the respectful portrayal of Jane’s decision to wait for marriage. Her partners, though not necessarily sharing her beliefs, respect her boundaries—a refreshing portrayal in today’s media landscape.
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: the show’s content may not be suitable for all audiences. There are themes of infidelity, scandals, and some intimate scenes, albeit within a PG-13 rating. Additionally, the inclusion of same-sex couples might be a concern for some viewers.
Despite its imperfections, “Jane the Virgin” offers a glimpse into a character striving to live out her faith in a complex world. It’s a reminder that, in the midst of chaos, God’s presence can be felt.
So, where does “Jane the Virgin” stand in my book? From a critical standpoint, it’s an 8 out of 10—an addictive, well-crafted series. From a Catholic perspective, I’d give it a 6 out of 10. While not perfect, it’s a refreshing departure from typical portrayals of Catholicism in media.
