Top 10 St. Teresa of Calcutta Quotes of All Time

by Consecrated Life, Faith & Life, Saints, St. Mother Teresa

Many of us anticipated the day in which we could call our beloved Mother Teresa, Saint Teresa of Calcutta.  She lived her life as a witness to this generation of Catholics and was canonized by Pope Francis on September 4th, 2016.  Because of modern technology, we are have been able to have a more intimate view of her life than we have ever been able to have of most previous saints. These glimpses of her saintly life come to us through moving photographs and powerful videos.

We’ve witnessed her dedication to serving Christ by giving her life to the poorest of the poor.  We’ve watched her embrace everyone from lepers and abandoned babies to leaders of nations and the Popes of her time. We’ve been blessed to hear her give speeches that range from accepting the Nobel Peace Prize to the National Prayer Breakfast in 1994. We have even been given the gift of reading some of her most intimate thoughts and struggles so that we may overcome times of darkness in our own spiritual life.

St. Teresa of Calcutta was more than just a woman with words of wisdom.  Her actions and her humility spoke louder than anything she ever said.  As you reflect on these quotes, envision the life she lived for God. Ask the Lord to help you live as St. Teresa did and ask our newest Saint to intercede on your behalf. St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us!

4 Ways to Celebrate Mother Teresa’s Life

1.) Read some books on the life of Mother Teresa:  There are many details of Mother Teresa’s life that popular media has not adequately covered. Be sure to read about her life’s work from a trusted source. Ignatius Press gave me the chance to review the following wonderful books and I highly recommend them.

  • Mother Teresa: The Smile of Calcutta –  This is a beautifully illustrated book for children 5 years and up that tells the story of the life of Mother Teresa in a way that they can understand. Mother Teresa is a Saint that draws children in because of her love for them and this book does a wonderful job of helping kids to understand the virtues she so powerfully lived out.
  • Mother Teresa of Calcutta  – Another captivating children’s book that depicts the life of Mother Teresa in a way that kids are able to relate to.  This book has been a favorite among my own children and was insightful for me to read as well.
  • Mother Teresa: Come Be My Light: The Private Writings of the Saint of Calcutta – This book is a collection of the private writings and letters of Mother Teresa. It describes in detail in struggles and dives deeper into her spiritual journey.

2.) Watch a movie about the life of Mother Teresa:

3.) Join in Saying the Daily Prayer of Mother Teresa (Bonus: Work on memorizing it!):

“Dear Jesus, help me to spread Thy fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others. Amen.”

4.) Find Someone to Serve:

As was said earlier in this post, Mother Teresa was much more than a woman of words.  She was a woman of action. The best way to celebrate her life is to find someone, anyone, to serve and to love.  Start in your own home by simply getting a glass of water or doing an extra chore for a family member. Do it with joy and offer it to the Lord. Don’t stop there!  Research a way to serve the unborn, the elderly, the poor or the forgotten of your community.  In doing so, you will embrace the life and mission of St. Teresa of Calcutta!
