Born Alessandro Ludovisi in Bologna on January 9, 1554 to Pompeo Ludovisi, Count of Samoggia, and Camillia Bianchini and he was the third of seven children.

Ludovisi received his education at the Roman College run by the Jesuits, the Society of Jesus, and he received degrees in canon and Roman law from the University of Bologna on June 4th 1575.

On March 12 1612 Pope Paul V appointed Ludovisi as the Archbishop of Bologna and he then received the sacrament of Holy Orders and had his consecration as a bishop on May 1, 1612.

On September 19, 1616 Pope Paul V elevated Ludovisi to become a cardinal. Pope Paul V died and Ludovisi joined the conclave. He chose the name Gregory XV and received his crown on February 14, 1621.
