I pray that someday I’ll be the type of person that can articulately, gracefully, and boldly respond when I hear someone near me speak the Lord’s name in anger or frustration or as a curse word. Right now, I’m not there.

I don’t really know how to put into words exactly what my heart feels when I hear my Savior’s name being used in such a way.  I’m immediately filled with sorrow because so many in our world today don’t understand the love and power of Jesus and, at the same time, I’m filled with anger that the name of Jesus is no longer sacred. I’ll never understand why it is acceptable to yell the name of Jesus Christ at sporting events, in movies, and even in casual conversation.

To my surprise, it was athlete Tim Tebow who helped me understand what my response should be when people use the name of Jesus in vain. Watch this video and listen closely to his automatic reply.

Other quick and easy replies to try:

-Blessed be His Name

– Came that you might be saved

-Son of God, have mercy on me and on the whole world

-Forgive us our sins

– To Him be the glory, the honor, and praise

Take the time to think and pray about your response. If you’re not quite ready to engage in a theological discussion with those around you, these phrases, which are really prayers, will come in handy when needed. Be prepared. Do what you can to help others learn the importance of respecting the name of Jesus.
